Big Eyed Puerto Rican-Domincan

Another long day at work. 11-4. Not a terribly long shift, however standing at a register passing out fake smiles and acts of kindness to 50% of the people that come in can definitely drag it out. However, today .. I'm not sure what it was but every 3-4 out of 10 people either asked me whether or not I was Puerto Rican or Dominican at all .. OR commented on the size of my eyes.

I'm not sure how many times I'll have to say this to people but, I'm black and I'm Cherokee. That is all. Granted, my mother and father's last names leave a little room for some wonder .. that's all I've got for y'all. Black. Cherokee. Black. Cherokee. No Puerto Rican. No Dominican. I can not speak Spanish past what I've learned and just as quickly forgotten, nor am I familiar with 'the best Spanish dishes to try'. I was born in America, and I do not feel deprived of my 'homeland experiences' because this is my damn homeland.

As for my eyes, I personally do not think they're that big. However, according to the general public, they are. I understand that when I'm in certain situations, they can become very large, (ie: witnessing that fight in the Bronx, keeping an eye out for that nigga on the metro, walking through the streets of DC after sundown) but when I am relaxed, I feel as if they are a normal size. A. Normal. Size.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not offended per say about either of these comments people make. It's just that I find it kind of strange how people try to force them upon me. There's nothing wrong with having big eyes or being a Puerto Rican or Dominican .. but please people, you can not just go around making people what you want them to be. Sheesh <3
